The hospital that we spent last Christmas and New Years—that I was connected to Larry for 4 days—that Akira joined our world—that I stressed over learning how to breastfeed while connected to bunch of machines—that we met the most dedicated and kind nurses (some a little scary but you warm up to them after spending 8 days at one place)—that the woman who delivered lunch everyday gave me an extra cup of orange juice because she remembered that I said I like ’em—that made the gender screw-up on Akira’s birth certificate—delivered one last baby today.
St. Vincent’s Hospital shut down as of today. Why they could not be saved when they have been around for 160 years saving lives? Why banks can be saved but not hospitals that take in the poor and the uninsured? It makes me think of a day in the future when I will have to explain the “it ain’t right” world we live in to my son.
I imagine that for the people who worked there it was not only that they lost jobs but it’s like breaking up a family. Very sad.
